Burnt-out stolen car dumped in bunker on Overtoun Golf Club’s second hole

·

Overtoun Golf Club in Clydebank has posted these incredible images of a burnt-out car that was dumped in a bunker on its second hole, just hours before a charity golf event.

The club said that what its team found at 6.30am on Sunday was “not the start to the day they wanted or expected”. The vehicle had been stolen from a property nearby in the early hours of the same day, according to Police Scotland, and was later found on fire.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the theft.

The club said the second hole has been damaged several times this year by bikes, but that this “has taken it to a new level”. “When I got sent the photo of it in flames I genuinely thought it was AI and the guys having a laugh but it was very real,” the club said in statement.

It added that no one at the club could control or prevent such incidents, calling the fire “a kick in the teeth for everyone trying so hard to maintain our course to the highest standards”. The team now faces a recovery operation, which the club says will cause more damage to the surrounding area.

The Texas Scramble, organised by the Dalmuir Golf Course Charity Trust, went ahead as planned, and the club said everyone who played had a great day, with the course and greens in excellent condition. It thanked greenstaff Kyle and Brian and the Overtoun volunteers who prepared the course, singling out Gavin Millar and Andy Martin. Jim Brogan, it said, raked the bunkers on Saturday night after his own round.

The club said there were two holes in one on the day: Stephen Tolland on the 4th and Jim Brogan on the 12th. It joked that they could toss a coin for the car, adding that a burnt-out motor was “somewhat nostalgic to a bygone era” for visiting players.
