Stephen Chick, general manager, Laguna Golf Phuket in Thailand, talks academy investment, sustainable course management and why the resort’s integrated hospitality model is a powerful differentiator in one of Asia’s most competitive golf markets.

Laguna Phuket has grown with a clear sense of purpose and strengthened its international profile over recent years. From a general manager’s perspective, what have been your immediate priorities since taking on the role?
Since assuming the role of General Manager at Laguna Golf Phuket, my immediate priorities have focused on enhancing guest experiences and advancing the resort for sustainable long-term growth. The primary objective has been to elevate the overall experience for both guests and members by leveraging metrics from 59 club.
Additionally, we have prioritised the development of our academy offering through enhanced coaching programmes, investment in technology, and junior development initiatives, helping to increase footfall at the academy and strengthen engagement among new and developing golfers. Our partnership with The PGA has played an instrumental role in supporting these initiatives.
Recognising the growing importance of player development and engagement, especially among juniors and new golfers, we are investing in coaching structures, programming, and technology.

Our latest improvement includes a new putting studio equipped with a tilting platform and Science and Motion technology for high-level technique analysis, and custom putter fittings, ensuring that players receive equipment tailored to their needs.
We are now working on expanding our events and tournament calendar by collaborating with various organisations, and our goal is to introduce a wide array of events throughout the season to enrich the golfing experience and enhance Laguna Phuket’s appeal as an integrated resort destination.
Lastly, Laguna Golf Phuket is actively exploring innovative solutions and sustainability initiatives to improve course conditions while minimising our environmental footprint. Our sustainability strategy focuses on responsible turf management, biodiversity enhancement, water conservation and strategic reforestation initiatives that strengthen the course ecosystem while reducing environmental impact.

Laguna Phuket operates within a broader resort ecosystem rather than as a standalone golf facility. How important is that wider hospitality infrastructure in shaping the commercial positioning of the golf product?
Being part of Laguna Phuket’s integrated resort ecosystem offers a significant competitive advantage. Guests here enjoy seamless access to world-class accommodation, dining, wellness, and recreational experiences, presenting a compelling proposition that goes far beyond golf.
For instance, curating integrated resort experiences that combine golf, accommodation, dining and wellness attracts a wide range of customers, from golf enthusiasts to families seeking a well-rounded holiday.
Moreover, Laguna Golf Phuket’s capacity to host events, conferences, and gatherings positions the golf course as a desirable venue for corporate outings and leisure activities. This further enhances its reputation as a bi-leisure destination where visitors can seamlessly transition from work to leisure. In essence, the surrounding hospitality infrastructure not only supports the golf facility’s operational aspects but also enhances its marketability and overall guest experience.

Laguna Golf Phuket has a distinctive asset in the PGA Academy. From a business and brand perspective, how valuable is that in differentiating the venue within a competitive regional market?
For sure, the PGA Academy is one of our strongest differentiators. As the only PGA Academy in Southeast Asia, it enhances our credibility and reinforces Laguna Golf Phuket’s position as a leader in golf education. Beyond attracting golfers seeking professional instruction, it creates opportunities for partnerships, events, and corporate programmes while strengthening our international appeal.

The PGA-branded Academy attracts a diverse clientele – from golf enthusiasts eager to improve their game, to families seeking recreational activities, to corporate clients interested in team-building events. This diversification increases revenue streams.
The presence of a PGA-branded Academy also opens the door to collaborations with golf schools, professional players, and corporate sponsors, further elevating the venue’s profile and leading to co-hosted events, tournaments, and clinics.
Investments in high-quality facilities and infrastructure enhance the overall golfing experience, making it more attractive to potential visitors. In a competitive regional market, this advantage positions Laguna Golf Phuket as a leader in golf education and training, attracting golfers and leisure travellers from key international markets.

Golf travellers are increasingly looking beyond the course itself, with expectations now spanning service, training, accommodation and the overall experience. How do you see the role of a modern golf destination evolving in response to that shift?
The evolution of a modern golf destination is highly responsive to the changing expectations of golf travellers. Today’s golfers seek far more than a round of golf and want a comprehensive experience that encompasses their entire stay.
First and foremost, providing exceptional service is paramount, and we strive to create a welcoming environment where every guest feels valued. Our staff are trained to anticipate the needs of all guests, whether they are seasoned golfers or newcomers to the sport.

In terms of training, we also recognise the importance of offering high-quality coaching and practice facilities. We have invested in developing our driving range, short game areas, and hiring certified PGA instructors who provide tailored training programmes. This approach ensures that our guests can improve their skills while enjoying their time with us.
Accommodation is another key aspect of our offerings. Guests increasingly expect luxurious and comfortable lodging with easy access to the golf course, and the integrated resort concept offers stunning views, premium amenities, and access to additional recreational activities, providing a well-rounded experience.

Finally, we believe that the overall experience goes beyond just golf. We focus on creating packages that integrate local cultural experiences, culinary delights, and wellness activities. This holistic approach allows our guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Phuket while enjoying everything we have to offer as a golf destination.
We believe that the future of golf destinations lies in delivering a seamless blend of sport, hospitality, wellness and local culture, and our ambition is to ensure every guest leaves with memories that extend well beyond the golf course and inspires them to return.
