Golf Kingdom Chadwell Heath in Essex has rebranded as Whalebone Golf Club less than a year after it was acquired by Blackedge Golf and British Ensign Golf.

The venue has experienced a tumultuous few years – after closing down it was acquired by American Golf and reopened in 2022, before being sold last year.

Its new owners say the new name signals more than a change in identity. It represents a fundamental shift in how golf is experienced – moving away from tradition-bound barriers and towards a modern, open and community-led club.

“The club has been reimagined as a place where anyone – regardless of background, ability or experience – can play, learn and belong,” said a spokesman.

“From its 18-hole course and 25-bay driving range, to its Moby Golf (mini-golf), Foot Golf and beginner-friendly formats, Whalebone Golf Club offers multiple ways into the game.

“Whether it’s a first swing, a casual round with friends, or serious practice, the club is designed to meet people where they are. Whalebone Golf Club’s philosophy is simple: Play as you are. No dress codes. No gatekeeping. Just golf, in all its forms.”

Edward Blacker, co-founder of Whalebone Golf Club, said: “Golf has always had an incredible spirit – the calm, the craft, the challenge – but for too long it hasn’t felt open to everyone.

“Whalebone Golf Club is about keeping everything that’s great about the game, while removing the barriers that stop people getting involved.

“Whether you’re picking up a club for the first time or you’ve played for years, this is a place where you can come as you are and feel like you belong.”
