A PGA golf course at a Wiltshire Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort has appointed a new director of golf and head greenkeeper as it seeks to further enhance its member and visitor experience.
Commencing his role at Bowood Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort, Josh Hirst is bringing 20 years of experience to the position, having already established a successful career in golf operations and management.
A qualified PGA Professional since 2011, after completing his training at Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds, Josh has honed his skills through coaching with the acclaimed Leadbetter Academy. His career has also afforded him the opportunity to gain invaluable insights into various aspects of the industry through roles in sales, operations, and management.

Josh’s most recent position was golf operations manager at The Manor House hotel in Wiltshire, where he amassed a wealth of industry experience to build on in his new role at Bowood.
Speaking on his new role, Josh said: “I’m delighted to be part of the Bowood team and excited to work alongside them and our members to elevate the golf experience at this prestigious club. My vision is to build on the club’s already well-established reputation, which offers an inclusive and enjoyable environment for all players. The course, facilities and services reflect the highest standards, and I strongly believe that open communication and member feedback are essential to continuous improvement. Together, we can continue to enhance a thriving golf community that we can all take pride in.”
To further elevate Bowood’s golf offering, Josh plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of all members and visitors to get a deeper understanding of their needs and expectations. He believes their feedback will be invaluable in shaping his strategies to build on the overall experience at Bowood, from course conditions and clubhouse amenities to customer service and event offerings.
This commitment demonstrates Josh’s dedication to working closely with the team at Bowood to maintain the club’s position as a premier golf destination for all golf enthusiasts.
Bowood has also promoted David Wyborn to head greenkeeper to help keep the estate’s course in pristine condition. Having been at the club for almost two years, David has impressed his peers, transferring his skills he acquired over 36 years as course manager at the prestigious Foxhills Golf Club in Surrey. He also claimed third in the ‘Greenkeeper of the Year’ awards 2024 – a reflection of his expertise and dedication to creating world-class golf courses.

Talking about David’s promotion, Josh said: “We’re thrilled to have David lead our on-course team. He’s already hit the ground running, bringing with him not just his extensive experience but also a genuine passion for upholding the highest standards in course maintenance. Having been part of the greenkeeping team at Bowood for nearly two years, David has a solid grasp of the course.
