Proposals that would secure the long-term future of golf at Solent Meads have been outlined.
BCP ((Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole) Council is undertaking a procurement process to appoint an operator for golf facilities at the site, with a lease that could run up until 2051.
The move marks an important milestone for the future of the site and ensures golf remains at the heart of the community, with the new agreement explicitly committing to keeping golf accessible and affordable to all ages and abilities.
The successful operator will deliver substantial investment in the clubhouse, golf shop, driving range, café and public toilets, improving the experience for golfers and visitors alike.
Cllr Richard Herrett, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for destination, leisure, and commercial operations, said: “Golf has been an important part of Solent Meads for many years and this procurement process is about securing its future as a valued community asset.
“These proposals will see significant investment in the existing facilities whilst ensuring the course remains accessible and affordable to all ages and abilities.
“We know that some residents were concerned last year after reports suggested the facility would close but I want to be clear: golf is here to stay and we always said it was on the table but we had to review our options ahead of the current lease ending.
“This is an exciting opportunity that re-energises our commitment to golf in this part of the community.”
Proposals have previously been outlined on how to improve biodiversity at three greenspaces, totalling 59 hectares of land, of which Solent Meads golf course formed a small portion.
These plans are not about replacing the golf course but, rather, working with the successful operator to identify opportunities to enhance nature across the site. This could include new trees and hedgerow, ponds, and bird boxes, helping make the most of the site’s unique location next to Hengistbury Head.
This approach builds on BCP Council’s long-term vision for Solent Meads, combining a golf offering with boosting community access to green spaces and helping nature to thrive. Importantly, the improvements will enhance the golf facilities rather than replace them, meaning both types of birdies will be better off as a result.
The current lease at the golf course expires in November 2026. Legally, the council cannot simply “roll over” that lease to the existing operator and is required to go through a full tender process to retain the golf facility. The current operator can take part in that process and put forward a bid for the new lease.
