Prestonfield Golf Club named Scottish golf club of the year

·

Prestonfield Golf Club has been named Scottish Golf’s Club of the Year 2025.

The award, sponsored by Pin Vision, was given to the Edinburgh club after judges were impressed by not only the strength of the business but also the sense of community that is felt through all aspects of club life.

Back after an eight-year absence, the Scottish Golf Awards at voco® Grand Central Glasgow celebrated all that’s good about the game of golf in Scotland.

Hosts Eilidh Barbour and Martin Geissler announced winners from 11 categories.

The ceremony recognised the achievements of players (both professional and amateur), volunteers, coaches, clubs and officials who all contributed hugely to the success and profile of golf in Scotland during the past year.

From being in a loss-making situation just five years ago, Prestonfield is now in the black with over 630 playing members and around 100 enjoying social membership.

With junior and female membership on the rise, planning in place for growth and the club clear in its values, mission and strategy, Prestonfield is well positioned to deal with the economic challenges that lie ahead.

Prestonfield club captain Lynn Abernethy said:We’re located right in the heart of Edinburgh and the backdrop we have is of Arthur’s Seat – we say it’s golfing in the shadow of a volcano. It’s just stunning.

“We have the setting but it’s a very friendly club that has a great reputation for being welcoming.

“That doesn’t just happen, we work hard at that and make people welcome and getting people buddied up with existing members and getting them on the course so they feel comfortable.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re male, female, junior – you can try the course from different tees. Everyone can play depending on what they want to do.

“The golf club is part of the community.”

Prestonfield fought off strong competition from Mearns Castle Golf Club and Castle Douglas Golf Club to take the award.

Mearns Castle impressed as a modern club and a great example of a commercially driven operation that re-invested profits in its members, staff and facility.

Castle Douglas was also praised by judges for being a commercially astute club with a strong commitment to growth of junior and female participation and stewardship of the environment.

Elsewhere, Dunnikier Park Community Golf’s amazing success story in introducing the game to underprivileged or vulnerable groups in the Kirkcaldy area has earned it the Golf For All Community Award sponsored by Marsh thanks to their ongoing and outstanding work with local men, women and children from a variety of social and economic backgrounds.

By using the facilities at their six-hole course, Dunnikier Park has been able to bring to life the concept of ‘Park Golf’, a more relaxed and informal way for beginners to enjoy the game.

Commenting on the success of the night, Scottish Golf CEO Robbie Clyde said: “It was a real privilege to be in the room, to hear so many amazing stories from our nominees and to join in the loud rounds of applause for our winners.

“This was a fantastic celebration of all that’s good about our game and one which Scottish Golf will now aim to repeat on an annual basis.

“For me, golf is Scotland’s national sport. It’s only right that we shout about the achievements of the players, volunteers, clubs and organisations that make our game so special.

“From Calum and Hannah as rising stars to Bob and Gemma who fly the flag for Scotland on the world stage, we have players that make us feel proud to be Scots.

“At the grassroots of the game, the unbelievable passion shown at clubs and by coaches and volunteers is both humbling and inspiring.

“The 2025 Scottish Golf Awards was a chance for everyone who loves golf in our country to say a collective thank you to those unsung heroes without whom the game would not survive.

“The example set by June McEwan, our Lifetime Honour Award winner, over five decades as a volunteer typifies that spirit and passion. What a contribution to the game!

“I’d like to add my own personal thanks to our hosts Martin and Eilidh, such consummate professionals, our many sponsors for their generous backing and the wider team at Scottish Golf who put in so much hard work to make this truly a night to remember.

“To everyone who loves the game, plays the game and supports the game, here’s to a great season ahead with plenty putts holed and new memories created.”
