The American billionaire, Donald Trump, has said that the world’s sixth oldest golf club has been “destroyed” due to a nearby wind turbine.
He told a press conference following his appearance at the Scottish Parliament’s economy, energy and tourism committee that the erection of a wind turbine at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club has “finished” the course, which was built in 1780.
On Monday a 218 feet turbine, which powers an engineering firm based at Aberdeen Science and Energy Park, was erected at the course beside the 14th tee.
“Royal Aberdeen was a Scottish jewel but the course has been destroyed by a wind turbine,” he said. “You look down a magnificent hole and all you see is a turbine. The whole course is destroyed. It’s finished. It will destroy Turnberry and St Andrews if wind turbines get built there too.”
Earlier Mr Trump stated that he would have built his Scottish golf course in Ireland had he known a windfarm was going to be built near it, and added that he will build his hotel at the Aberdeenshire course if the turbines are not built.
“If we don’t win the fight I’ll have to talk to you again,” Trump told the parliamentary inquiry. “But I think we will win that fight.
“It will be the destruction of Scotland if this madness continues.”
