From Peter Dawson’s comments that he couldn’t tell single-sex Open venues to admit female members as that ‘is frankly a bullying position’ to George O’Grady helpfully denying that Segio Garcia is a racist, by saying many of his friends are ‘coloured athletes’, it’s not been a great year for the leading names in golf to show off their diversity credentials.
But none of these people make the top ten most politically incorrect comments from golfers, golf’s administrators and the golf media in the last generation, which we have compiled.
Golf has been accused of sexism and racism over the years, and rightly so. Clifford Roberts, the co-founder of Augusta National Golf Club, once said in the 1970s: “As long as I’m alive, all the golfers will be white and all the caddies will be black.”
Since then, society, particularly in the last 25 years, has changed, and no-one could make a comment like that today. But as recent comments have proven, leading figures can still cause offence. Click ‘Next’ to view the top 10.
