A huge fire that has caused major damage to the clubhouse at West Essex Golf Club was started accidentally during roofing works, fire investigators have concluded.
About 60 firefighters from 11 stations spent about four hours tackling the blaze. There are no reports of any injuries.
The two-storey clubhouse opened in 1989.

A spokesperson for Essex Golf said it extended “our heartfelt sympathy to the members, staff and friends of West Essex Golf Club” after the “catastrophic” incident.
“We are thankful no-one was injured, it could easily have been much worse,” they added.
“May the strength of your membership, and the love for our sport help bring resilience, unity and a speedy return to normality.”
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: “When the first fire crews arrived they confirmed everyone was accounted for and no one was injured. They requested additional fire engines to support.”
The spokesperson added: “Fire officers at the scene report that firefighters are making good progress tackling the large fire. Fire crews are working hard to prevent the fire spreading to the rear of the building.”
The historic golf club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2025 after it was founded in 1900. It was designed by the Scottish golfer James Braid and the 270 degrees elevated landscape offer views of the London skylines.
It is a popular location for wedding receptions as well as golfers.
One couple, Vanessa Curto and Joe Mintz, booked the venue for up to 200 guests, for their wedding reception to take place in June.

“It was just the perfect location,” said Mintz, adding that he initially thought the news was “a wind-up”.
“The management were incredible, the price, everything involved – it was just an absolute dream for us, so now it’s basically back to square one,” said Mintz, speaking to BBC Essex.
