More official golf scores were submitted in England in April than in any other April since the World Handicap System (WHS) was launched, it has been revealed.
While the WHS was only launched in late 2020, the data is significant because golf participation has seen a huge boost since Covid, and this is more evidence that the growth in the game seen in the last five years is not reversing.
April is also a particularly important month as it is traditionally seen as the first full month of the new golfing season.
More scores were, in fact, submitted in April 2025 in England than in April 2021 – even though golf courses opened after a lockdown at the end of March 2021, which led to another participation boom.
In total, over 1.4 million scores were submitted through the WHS.

England Golf states that Rory McIlroy’s completion of the Grand Slam seems to have inspired many to get out on the course, while consistently dry, warm and sunny weather undoubtedly helped as well.
“The 1.4 million scores is the highest amount submitted in April since records began, as well as a 95 percent increase on scores submitted during the same month last year,” said a spokesman.
“From January to April 2025, England Golf has also seen 67 percent more scores submitted through the WHS compared to 2024, which was its record-breaking year to date, with 10.2 million scores submitted.”
England Golf added that April saw its 60,000th subscription to iGolf, which was launched in 2021 to provide non-club members with a Handicap Index.
