3. Ben Wright, 1995. ‘Lesbians hurt women’s golf’

Ben Wright, with his British accent, was one of the most famous television commentators in the US – right up until he got fired.

In 1995 he gave an interview in which he said “lesbians in the sport hurt women’s golf”, “they’re going to a butch game and that furthers the bad image of the game” and “women are handicapped by having boobs. It’s not easy for them to keep their left arm straight, and that’s one of the tenets of the game. Their boobs get in the way.”

He originally denied making the comments but when it was proven that he did, he complained that he thought the interview was off the record.

CBS sacked him and within three years he was in rehab, suffering from depression.

“A day doesn’t go by that I don’t regret how I reacted,” he once said.

    Whatever happend to “sticks & stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me. Society far too preciuos and sensitive and all the Press are doing is stirring up because they have no real stories of interest or want to help lawyers earn litigation fees!!!
